  • San Felice Circeo is one of the oldest cities in Italy. It's history begins with the Neanderthal man, whose bones were found in a cave near the port.In Romen times and in the middle ages life was vibrant in this little community by ythe sea then called "Circei" because according to the legend Ulysses met the half goddess "Circe" which transformed his warriors into pigs here. During the succeeding centuries San Fellice Circeo lost it's importance and only in the 1950's did the romans become interested in San Felice as a resort again as it is only an hour's drive south of the capital (on the original Appian Way or Via Appia) and in an area of great beauty. Today San Felice Circeo is very lively during the summer holidays when a lot of Italians spend their holidays there. Before and after those months it transforms itself into a typical mediterranean village.

5 stars = Salvatore's

I am going back to San Felice for the 5th time this September which I think says it all! Salvatore's is like my holida home in Italy without the work involved in keeping a home. I go around the same time each year and so I usually meet friends from the previous years. It is that sort of place, people keep coming back. There is a very homely friendly atmosphere, the food is really good (real Italian food) and the 'craic' is great! But even if all that was not so, the easy access beach makes this a winner anyway. This first time I was there I would wheel down to the edge of the sea several time a day - just because I could.

5 stars = Holiday at Centro Ferie Salvatore

Review

During the last week of May '07, I went on holiday with a friend, to the above. This is a superb beach holiday for disabled and able bodied alike. The Centro is a cross between a hotel and a youth hostel set in beautiful gardens with al fresco dining. The number of abled bodied to disabled was around 10:1,with disabled persons able to enjoy a holiday with friends and family. The facilities were excellent with accessible bathrooms, meals and a fleet of wheelchair accessible transport to take you to the beach each day or on an excursion. It was all so relaxed at the Centro that I used to have my breakfast in my nighty each day and stay chatting in the bar each evening to all nationalities till late! Once on the beach the Centro staff would continue to look after you. They would offer help on and off the raised sunbed and even help you into the sea on a beach wheelchair. There was a row of disabled toilets there and an accessible bar. There were painted concrete paths to the sea shore to save wheeling through sand. A masseur offered massage therapy. One day they took us to Rome for the day. I was in the power chair and managed to do most of the main sites including St Peters and the collaseum. San Felice is in a beautiful area and a visit to the medieval town nearby was an absolute delight. This is one of the most sociable holidays that I have ever been on and I look forward to going back one day. Moira
